Obesity or overweight is considered a health risk for those who are thinking about becoming or are already pregnant. Because of this, it is recommended that women who are overweight should loose weight before becoming pregnant and those who are overweight during their pregnancy should monitor their weight gain carefully so as not to gain too much. Excessive weight gain during pregnancy is defined as 7 or more pounds of weight gain in one month.
Women who are overweight at the beginning of their pregnancy or who become overweight during their pregnancy are at increased risk of:
- gestational diabetes
- preeclampsia
- cesarean section
- stillbirth
- premature birth
- macrosomia
- late fetal death
- early neonatal death
- birth defects
- death of the mother
