Diabetes is a disease in which your blood glucose, or sugar, levels are too high. Glucose comes from the foods you eat. Insulin is a hormone that helps the glucose get into your cells to give them energy. With Type 1 diabetes, your body does not make insulin. With Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, your body does not make or use insulin well. Without enough insulin, the glucose stays in your blood
Because diabetes is a disease in which management through nutrition is critical, nutrition counseling is just as critical. At Budding Baby our Nutritionist/Dietitian will address your nutritional needs, keeping into perspective foods and their influence on your blood sugar level. By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition practices, you will decrease your risk of complications of diabetes including:
- kidney disease
- blindness
- heart disease
- amputations, etc.
When you are pregnant, too much glucose is not good for your baby. In the United States, three to eight of every 100 pregnant women get gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is diabetes that happens for the first time when a woman is pregnant. Gestational diabetes goes away when you have your baby, but it does increase your risk for having diabetes later.
Gestational diabetes raises the risk of problems for the baby and the mother. Complications include:
- macrosomia
- hypoglycemia
- birth injury
- jaundice
- respiratory distress syndrome
Nutrition management is equally as important in those experiencing gestational diabetes. Many "soon to be mom's" find a proper eating plan controls their blood sugar to the point that medication is not necessary. Because complications of gestational diabetes are manageable and preventable, nutrition counseling is of the utmost importance. At Budding Baby our Nutritionist/Dietitian will work with your current eating habits and make improvements that will give you better control over your blood sugar level, reducing the risk of complications for you and your baby.
